Description This paper is dealing with the problem of subjectivity of the researcher, which very often negatively affects the results of formalised evaluation of pottery assemblages – an integral part of the majority of present day archaeological excavations. The aim of the work was to provide to a group of researchers a training assemblage of ceramics, which they processed in a database programme and subsequently the differences between their answers were compared. The results of the analysis yielded a list of descriptive attributes, which can be ordered from the least problematic ones up to descriptors considerably influenced by the subjectivity of the researcher. In the latter ones it is proposed how to lower the subjectivity. The results of this work may serve to researchers who analyse and evaluate ceramic assemblages as the basis for improvement of their work or as a springboard for further research in the field of subjectivity.
