Description My contribution attempts to present how – in the semantical and visual way – the “Balkans” art is presented in the currently used Czech Art Education textbooks. My work is based on the discussion of the definition and negative connotations of the Balkans and Orient on the one hand (Said, Todorova) and on the other hand on the assumption that the current Czech textbooks are non-ideological platforms for construing our thinking which should mean that they seek to limit the stereotyping. I base my observation on the most common contemporary Art Education textbooks (the selection is based on interviews with teachers of Art Education). The main topics of my work are: How is the “Balkans” art interpreted in the textbooks? What are the words which describe the art of Balkans? What are their semantic fields? Which “Balkans” artefacts are mentioned in the textbooks and does their description correspond to the requirement of non-stereotyping? What actually is the visual view of the Balkans of the Central-European students? My aim is to try to answer these questions.
