Description Ownership of private outdoor pools has recently proliferated. In my diploma thesis, I have given an overview of the types of artificial home swimming pools, the available accessories and the chemical substances used to sanitize the water. In addition, I have provided a toxicological and ecotoxicological evaluation of the latter and performed model calculations of water and electrical energy consumption. The thesis includes also an analysis of how the number of swimming pools has developed in selected areas. Eventually, I provide a commentary on the outcomes of my study and try to raise awareness about some potential related environmental risks. Because the results indicate a rather high consumption of electrical energy and water and high toxicity of some of the common substances, I suggest a follow-up study that should perform further chemical analysis and ecotoxicological evaluation not only of these substances, but also of their residues present in the water.
