Description Maternal smoking during pregnancy may inversely affect the intrauterine environment and early fetal exposure may have a detrimental effects on health in later life. The wide spectrum of damages includes also the reproductive functions. Although the results of experimental studies are more often similar than the clinical human studies, they allow to understand the mechanisms of action and predict the role of exposure to tobacco and to the other harmful chemicals in the tobacco and/or cigarette smoke early in life to the increasing trends in human infertility.
