Description The aim of this paper is to report on current research efforts in the area of parental choice of primary schools and to map the current theoretical approaches and concepts. I was looking for the key theories that have been proposed to explain the process of parental choice primary school, what was strengths and weaknesses of these theories and what methods were used in researches in these areas. In the Czech Republic for more than a quarter century parents are who choose a primary school for their child. It is a process that can significantly determine the future of the child and consequently also it has effect on the whole society. The primary school choice is in fact a mechanism that affects inequality in education. Educational policy not only in European countries, thus deals with issues and implementation options of choice precisely because of equal education opportunities as well as a tool to influence school quality. There were (mostly quantitative) researches in the Czech Republic in the last two decades, which aimed to find out what are the motivations and practices of parents in choosing primary schools. Compared to foreign researches but do not use social theories so much. This paper has the character of a review study, specifically by Mares (2013) regarding the type of critical review, which is based on a set of works on the topic of school choice in the period since 2000. It describes the knowledges obtained existing research, summarizes the results and compares them with each other. Analyzes selected theoretical approaches and concepts, methodology and critically assess their quality. The study primarily deals with Czech research in the next row from Europe and the USA, and finally there are also some relevant studies from other countries. In contrast to the the countries in which the state decides to which elementary school child has enter the primary school in the CR is primary school choosen by parents. The main question is, how parents make decisions when choose a school. Shaping the attitudes of parents and decision-making process is dependent on the social and political situation in the country and on the socioeconomic status of the family. This results in different values that parents hold, their attitude to way of rising their children, to school, to society, and therefore different goals that choosing schools pursue.
