Description The chapter deals with the myth of the dead city and explores urban imagery in Portuguese fiction at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. An analysis of novels and short stories by Fialho de Almeida, Raul Brandao amd Aquilino Ribeiro reveals a variety of urban configurations: a city can be suffering, dying, buried or submerged.
