Description | Bacterial infections occur in patients after allogeneic stem cell transplantation with the greatest frequency in the postengraftment. This intermediate posttransplant period is characterized by a deficiency of cellular immunity. Acute graft versus host disease represents a major risk factor for this period, resulting in delayed immune reconstitution and increasing the risk of infectious complications. Prompt diagnosis and initiation of empiric possibly targeted antimicrobial therapy reduces morbidity and mortality of patients. |
