Description This paper focuses on the direct use of corpora in teaching Czech as a foreign language. It uses a data-driven method which was first introduced by Tim Johns for teaching English in the 1990s. The students search in the corpus and then formulate a generalization of the rule. This paper shows how it is possible to use this method in teaching Czech. It concentrates on two main Czech corpus tools: SyD and KonText, and shows how to use these tools as a complement to a textbook or dictionary. Afterwards, it discusses types of “hands-off ” corpus exercises and their suitability for teaching Czech, and also how difficult is for the teacher to prepare them.
