Description The book Museum professions and the public 1 subtitled The outline of history and present of mutual relationships between museums and their audience follows up the historical development of relations between museum workers and the public on the territory of what are now the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The ideas of using collectibles in education already appeared at the time of private collecting and in the following period of emergence of proper museums. Their realisation, however, long remained in the shadow – partly due to other interests of museum workers and partly due to political situation which hindered any freedom of expression in the then society. Only the last third of the 19th century brought more consistent concepts of the relationship between museums and their audience and added to the forms of presentation of collections besides exhibitions also guided tours and publication activity. Among the most progressive museum institutions counted specialized museums, mainly museums of applied arts, which reflect topical trends in the field of production and industry. Many workers in museums of regional history and provincial museums encouraged to use museums in educational and training process and to implement innovations in museum presentation and working with audience. But these impulses were put into practice rather sporadically and the inconsistency and imbalance in educational activities still survived in the period of the first Czechoslovak Republic. A turning point on the territory of Czech lands and Slovakia became the onset of both the totalitarian regimes, which tried to use the potential of museums for their ideological activities. It also was for this reason that the socialist era experienced distinct efforts for professionalisation and scientification of the relationship to audience, which was also initiated by both of the museological cabinets and by the newly established museological education centres in Brno and Prague.
