Description By means of a qualitative discourse analysis, the submitted paper aims at revealing possible similarities and differences occurring in two editorials published in Lidové noviny at the beginning of October 1938 and offering an immediate response to the events related to the Munich Agreement. Both editorials were written by journalists, or more precisely external members (Jan Stránský and Emanuel Moravec), whose journalistic activities had been long associated with Lidové noviny and the pro-presidential policy supported by the daily. In the post-Munich atmosphere, both editorials provoked some disquiet of Lidové noviny readership, as they were perceived as a sign of appeasement towards Nazi Germany, being excessively critical to the First Republic. Nevertheless, their authors, during the Second Republic, the Protectorate and the war years, embarked on completely opposite journeys: Stránský went into exile, where he contributed to the exile activities associated with the personality of President Beneš, while Moravec became a leading figure of Protectorate collaboration, amounting to treason in his case. Using the discursive models presented in the examined editorials, the aim of the study is to depict the ideas of both journalistic protagonists in Lidové noviny on the future of Czechoslovakia at the turning point of its development and their careers, as well. The editorial written by Emanuel Moravec also raises a question whether one may trace elements suggesting his future fundamental ideological and political transformation.
