| Description | Anemia is a very common finding in cancer patients. From the pathophysiological point of view, the causes of anemia can be divided into three groups: 1. reduced erythrocyte production, 2. increased destruction of erythrocytes, and 3. blood loss. The pathogenesis of anemia in oncology patients is multifactorial; it may be a result of invasion of a cancer, its treatment, renal impairment, or other factors. Anemia affects up to 40% of patients with non-hematologic malignancies and up to 54% of patients treated chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In some cases, the symptoms of anemic syndrome are often the only warning sign of an oncology disease. Anemia has a significant impact on the quality of life of oncological patient and diagnostics and treatment of anemia should be part of comprehensive oncology care. |
