| Description | This paper deals with a national identity in narratives of Czech refugees who fled their country to Vienna after suppression of Prague spring by Warsaw Pact troops in August 1968. The main question is how these people, living almost 50 years in Austria, construct their national identity in their life stories. This article is based on 23 recorded and transcribed interviews with Czech refugees which were taken during three field researches conducted in Vienna and Prague between 2011 and 2014. The article, after describing a historical background, follows Brubaker´s and Cooper´s criticism of a term identity. Therefore it does not try to reveal the essential part of narrators´ Czech nationality, vice versa it gives a lot of space to narrators´ testimonies. The analysis of interviews is done in a way to show what “Czechness” means for post-Prague Spring Czech refugees in Vienna. |
