Description The lecture was devoted to ancient visual poetry as one of the characteristic textual forms of Late Antiquity. A chronological overview of this experimental technique was provided, running from the very first attempts at graphic manipulation with text in Archaic Greece through Hellenistic outline poems up to the masterpiece by the Roman poet Publilius Optatianus Porfyrius (3/4 century AD). Optatianus´s work, comprising both outline and intextual poems, as well as ingenious metrical experiments, represents - in the terminology of Roland Barthes - a "writerly" text par excellence.
