Description Schizophrenia is a severe complex mental disorder with high heritability which affects approximately 0.5-1% of the population worldwide. There are not available reliable diagnostic tests and the diagnosis is still based mainly on interview of the person and family members. Measuring of certain metabolites in biological fluids might be a tool for diagnosis of schizophrenia even in the early phase. As a result, novel method for determination of amino acids in human plasma was developed. Simple sample treatment comprised of addition of acetonitrile to the plasma sample in order to protein precipitation and centrifugation. Supernatant was collected and present amino acids were derivatized by naphthalene-2,3-dicarboxaldehyde in the presence of cyanide anion under mild alkaline condition. Fluorescent products, 2 substituted 1 cyanobenz[f]isoindoles, were separated by capillary electrophoresis coupled with fluorescent detection. Optimization and validation of the method is the subject of this contribution.
