Description Herpesviruses are the most complex viruses infecting humans. They usually establish latent infections and persist in the organism for lifelong. Herpesviruses can cause neuroinfections of various severity. Hemorrhagic encephalitis is the most serious neurological complication and despite available treatments, the disease still has high morbidity and mortality. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis, using cytology and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for direct proof of the virus, is considered the gold standard for the diagnostics. In this article we summarized the current diagnostic and therapeutic approaches used for management of herpetic neuroinfections.
