Description In this paper, we challenge the popular notion that older people as well as people living in rural areas are poor, therefore older people living in smaller villages are in extreme risk of social exclusion and poverty. We analyse two datasets to test this hypothesis. First, we employ SILC data to show that if various indicators of material deprivations are combined, it is more often older people living in bigger settlements who report problems more often, mainly due to high cost of living and daily expenses. Secondly, we present results of “Quality of life in rural areas in higher age” survey (2016), where more subtle and subjective measures of material deprivation and social exclusion were followed. This data talk more about specific subgroups and challenges in dependence on the rurality type and life-style.
