Description | Acute heart failure (AHF) is characterised by acute dysfunction mostly of left ventricle. The cause of AHF could be acute coronary syndrom, myocarditis, hypertension crisis, valvular disease or decompensation of previously known heart failure. Acute dysfunction of right ventricle is mainly caused by acute pulmonary embolism. The diagnostic methods used are: ECG, X-ray, natriuretic peptides and echocardiography. Other specialised methods depend on the cause of AHF. Treatment is based on solution of precipitating factors: e.g. PCI in myocardial infarction and symptomatic treatment, which includes: diuretics, vasodilation and inotropes (if there is a hypotension). In more serious cases mechanical devices and ultrafiltration can be used. |
