| Description | The old aristocratic governments were overthrown, and in many cities the tyrants were established at the end of the 6th century BC. The rising middle class supported trade and the formation of new colonies, which threatened Phoenician trade interests in the Western Mediterranean. This created the ideal prerequisite for long-standing conflict - Sicilian wars. |
