Description Vitamin B12 is important during pregnancy and lactation, particularly for normal growth and development. The American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics states, that a well-planned vegan diet is appropriate during all life stages. However, the German Nutrition Society do not recommend the vegan diet for pregnant or lactating women, infants, children or adolescents. Studies examining vitamin B12 status in pregnant and/or breastfeeding vegan women are very limited and most of them were published more than a decade ago. However, the data confirm low levels of serum vitamin B12 or its markers in vegan pregnant or breastfeeding women and their children. Despite the inconsistent recommendations of authorities, pregnancy and lactation are not mutually exclusive with a vegan diet. However, women should be aware of the potential risks and consult their diet with a physician and dietitian.
