Description Theoretic economists consider free competition to be a prerequisite for the efficient functioning of the economy, since it contributes to minimize costs and maximize benefits. In practice, however, these the positive effects are not always straightforward and simple - the more complex the structure of a particular sector, the more complicated the effect of competition. The presentation deals with the analysis of the effects of competition in a very specific sector of rail passenger transport. Based on empirical evidence, it identifies the positive and negative consequences of competition, looks for the causes of negative consequences and suggests solutions.
