Description The aging of population, ie the increase in the number and share of older people in the structure of society, is a global phenomenon that also affects the structure of the prison population. The linear and long-term increase in older persons serving a custodial sentence has a number of sources, of which demographic change itself is a substantial but not a single part. Age in prison begins earlier than in the general population, but, as in the general population, ageing offenders are heterogeneous group. The performance of both penitentiary and post-penitentiary care should consider the specifics of older prisoners in order to ensure the effective fulfillment of the resocialization goals of imprisonment.
