Description A happy smile is a motif that unites all the typical images of active ageing. However, different actors differ in their understanding of active ageing. Nevertheless, active ageing remains a remarkably popular remedy for maintaining prosperity. However, the very diversity of ideas about what active ageing means and how to fulfil it creates a crack in this seemingly ideal vision. The most frequently cited definition of active ageing by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2002 defines active ageing as a maximally inclusive concept promoting lifelong participation in society and a healthy lifestyle for all, regardless of various restrictions and limits, to improve the quality of life for all. In this issue of Social Studies, we return to the broad definition of WHO active ageing to capture some of the forms of current ageing and ageing. We try to bring mainly topics unknown in the Czech context so far in connection with ageing, and thus initiate further research in these areas.
