| Description | The author and journalist Franz Schamann (1876-1909), who came from Brno and worked in Vienna from 1902, was unanimously regarded as an extreme naturalist during his lifetime and beyond. Indeed, his texts contain numerous representations of symbolic as well as physical violence in typically proletarian or poor rural milieus. This article analyses Schamann's early texts set in Brno and South Moravia: the folk play Liebe (1901) and his first collection of stories Mährische Geschichten (1902). While in Liebe, killing is valued as a legitimate way out, sanctioned even by bourgeois institutions, on the way to the idealised bourgeois subject, the characters of Mährische Geschichten are caught in a network of violence that leaves them little choice but to act violently. The broad distribution of functions of violence in Schamann's texts is finally contextualised as a symptom of crisis of the bourgeois subject (Andreas Reckwitz). |
