Description The talk deals with the representation of out-groups in covid-related humour, presenting the partial findings of a project into Czech coronavirus humour. Based on data collected from the Czech social media from the first occurrence of the virus until spring 2021, it focuses on examples of aggressive humour that have a disaffiliative function. The talk identifies some of the group-based divisions and shows how such humorous items are capable of dividing people and creating “in-groups” that laugh at the “out-groups”/”the others” represented as the target of the humour. The presentation will discuss the presence of such targets in the Czech dataset and exemplify the development and change in time of who is the “other”, reflecting the changing social reality and perception of the pandemic.
