Description Early diagnosis of autism is crucial for the intervention, that can significantly increase the quality of life of children and their families. In the Czech Republic, children are mostly diagnosed with autism late – several years after first symptoms. Families are facing lack of professionals in the field, who could work with children. The paper is based on experience of parents with the diagnostic process, gathered by qualitative in-depth interviews. The interviews were conducted as a part of an international research project capturing patients´experience - DIPEx. We introduce the trajectories of families from the first symptoms to the final diagnosis, their experience with professional care and with the support from their relatives and friends. We discuss the meaning and significance of the diagnosis itself and the way the acceptance of the diagnosis affect the life of the whole family.
