| Description | The author presented selected findings from his Habilitation Thesis, consisting in a new corpus of Late Antique and Early Byzantine apotropaic amulets with Greek inscriptions. Followinf the introduction of main categories of material attestations of protective magic in Late Antiquity, the author focused in detail on the amulets with depictions of the so-called "Holy Rider" which forms one of the best-attested groups of apotropaic objects in the selected chronological frame. In addition to the analysis of the performative Greek inscriptions, the author discussed also geographical distribution of the archaeological findings, the interplay of Christian and "pagan" motives, bilingualism of the inscriptions and the iconography of the amulets. |
