Description Peat deposits are important natural archives of local and regional vegetation history. Although the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands still harbour many mires, the age of only five still existing localities was previously determined by means of radiocarbon dating. To identify the age of ten other mires, we sampled and dated their basal layers. Here we summarise the results of dating and basic palaeoecological observations. Most investigated mires are relatively old and originated in the Late Glacial or Early Holocene. Only one locality (Na Klátově fen) originated in the Middle Ages, probably after human-induced landscape deforestation
