| Description | Mysterium cosmographicum was the first attempt to explain the dimensions of the solar system. Kepler explain a scheme in which the five Platonic solids could be encared within spheres. This produced six layers, which in Kepler´s view corresponded to the six planets on the heliocentric scheme. He also worked out a preliminary formula connecting the size of each planet´s orb to how long each took to complete one orbit around the Sun. This work was the first erudite defence of the Copernican heliocentric worldview. |
