| Description | The novel Le retour de l'ours, by Quebec writer and journalist Catherine Lafrance, published in 2013, is one of the Franco-Canadian books in the vein of novels with the imagination of the end. It tells the story of the inhabitants of an Inuit village in Canada's Far North, survivors of a climate apocalypse. Symbolizing for them a legendary animal, the end of the dark ages that followed the apocalypse was accompanied by the prophecy of the return of the polar bear. When Aloupa, the old security guard, announces that he has seen one, the peaceful existence of the villagers comes to an end. The Return of the Bear is above all a reflection on the Canadian Far North and its natural environment, changed after serious climatic cataclysms. A tale of ecological anticipation for some, this story with strong mythological elements also analyzes human beings and their ability to constantly adapt and push their limits to ensure their survival. In this contribution, we will analyze how the notions of survival and northernness, as well as the elements of the end of the world and the promise of renewal, are present in this work. |
