Citation
Description Intersections of health, age and gender are explored to better understand power/dominance and (absence of) care relationships in narratives of Czech men on their lives and ageing process. The gendered topics of performance, able-bodied-ness, achievement vs. illness, powerlessness and crises are analysed critically, situated in the context of a post-socialist country - Czech Republic, to fill in gaps in topical research and contribution to current international knowledge. The ongoing sociological research study (2023-25) based on in-depth interviews with men thematises inequalities, marginalisation as well as relations of power, care and health of men in several social environments (fieldworks). The conference paper concentrates on two of them: men in health-care professions and “balancing” men (attenders of workshops designed for men to “look back” on their life-courses). The study revisits the concept of caring masculinities in relation to the topic of health and explores its potential opportunities as well as setbacks in understanding gender relations and relations of un/equality among men regarding their health status, caring practices and the ageing process.
