Citation
Description The paper focuses on the history of independent Croatian studies at Masaryk University in Brno. Until the mid-1990s, Croatian studies were part of the broader Yugoslav studies and Serbo-Croatian was officially taught as a language. The actual national variant taught depended both on the textbooks used and on the nationality of the lecturer. The separate study programme Croatian language and literature first opened in the academic year 1999/2000 and since then it has undergone a series of changes, which were sometimes wanted, sometimes forced, but always in the end marked a shift for the better. One of the current challenges is to maintain interest in this field of study and to retain high-quality students who will then become high-quality graduates.
