Description This chapter will discuss the current knowledge about the use of music-based interventions (music therapy and music medicine) for adults and children with epilepsy. We review the epidemiology of epilepsy and discuss possible mechanisms for the effects of music on clinical seizures and electroencephalographic activity, including theories regarding the “Mozart effect”. We discuss the specific effects of Mozart’s music on interictal and ictal activity, then outline key future research directions to improve our understanding of how music can help individuals with epilepsy. The contents of this chapter reveal limitations to past research while encouraging the investigation of music-based neuromodulation as an adjunctive intervention for epilepsy
