| Description | Food in later life is not only important in terms of nutrition and fulfilling physiological needs, but also has a strong identity-forming, social, symbolic and emotional dimension. In my presentation, I focus on the pleasure that food brings to older adults, in particular, how this pleasure is maintained, negotiated or lost in the context of issues of autonomy, health and care. In doing so, I focus primarily on the pleasure of eating rather than the pleasure of commensality, although these areas are often interconnected and mutually supportive. To analyse this theme, I use in-depth interviews with 23 home-dwelling older men and women, combined with a multi-case study of six care homes (in-depth interviews with clients, staff and video recordings from the dining rooms). Based on these data, I show how the meaning and emphasis on the pleasure of eating is constructed by different actors and what limits and constraints are placed on it.
