| Description | Humor is a social phenomenon that challenges norms, shapes collective identities, and negotiates historical ruptures. This paper presents my master’s thesis Humor as Social Action in Wende Novels by Thomas Brussig, which explores the functions of humor in the novels At the Shorter End of Sonnenallee and Heroes Like Us. The central question is how interdisciplinary approaches from cultural anthropology, literary studies, and psychology can be applied to literary analysis. The study categorizes humorous elements into eight humor styles, classified using the Comic Style Markers (CSM), ranging from irony to cynicism. It shows how these types of humor reflect social tensions and the political and cultural transformations during the Wende period. The paper highlights humor's role as a critical analytical tool and underscores the potential of interdisciplinary research in literary studies. |
