Description Johannes Kepler was not only an astronomer and mathematician, but also an optician. Astronomical interests motivated Kepler´s optical studies. In 1604 he published a work with titled Supplement to Vitella optics, one of the most important papers of modern optics. Among other things Kepler described the invention of an optical ecliptic instrument with a pinhole for determination of the apparent diameter of the Sun during solar eclipse. Much of his work was dedicated searching for the correct form of the law of refraction of light.
