| Description | This paper explores the development of novice teachers' competencies during their first two years of professional practice, focusing on reasons contributing to stagnation or regression. Using a longitudinal qualitative design, six novice teachers participated in three rounds of interviews. Analysis revealed three developmental trajectories: improvement, stagnation, and decline. While all teachers showed growth in some areas, none improved consistently across all competencies. Barriers to development included mastery of competence from pre-service training, lack of understanding, limiting beliefs, lack of agency, and external factors, with internal barriers being the most significant. The findings highlight individual differences in professional growth and challenge the assumption of a uniform developmental trajectory during the early years of teaching. |
