| Description | In addition to its nutritional function, food and dining also play an identity-forming, social, symbolic, and emotional role. In my contribution, I focus on the importance of dining arrangements for supporting clients' dignity in care homes and memory care units. To analyse this topic, I use in-depth interviews with 23 older adults living in households and a multi-case study of six care homes and memory care units (in-depth interviews with 42 clients, 16 interviews with staff, and 120 video recordings from dining rooms). Based on this data, I show how the transition to institutional care changes the meaning of food for seniors. Above all, I show how dining practices in individual facilities are reflected in clients' quality of life and how they support or threaten their dignity.
