| Description | This paper offers an analysis of two contemporary Czech novels — Město v mlze by Jaroslav Konáš and Letnice by Miroslav Hlaučo — through the lens of Stefan Ekman’s cognitive model of urban fantasy, based on the structure of fictional worlds. The model is situated within the context of contemporary Czech prose and further developed as a framework for exploring the urban fantastic. Both texts exemplify a type of fictional world in which the natural and the supernatural share the same geographical space: the boundaries of the supernatural domain do not extend beyond the limits of a single town. This spatial confinement contributes to the mythicisation of place, which acquires sacral qualities—cursed in the case of Rozklava (Město v mlze), utopian in the case of Letnice. The paper demonstrates how Ekman’s typology can be adapted to a non-Anglophone literary context and how the fantastic in urban space can be examined independently of genre categorisation. |
