Description Are Czech children ready for first-grade instruction at the time they enter school? At what age are they truly ready? Data from the standardization of the Achievement test battery (BACH) suggest that some children at age six lack sufficient prerequisites for learning to read and write. Most of them catch up during the school year, but overall, basic skills remain relatively low. The presentation illustrates the situation with several examples and discusses the potential benefits and drawbacks of the recent parliamentary amendment to the Education Act, which significantly restricts the possibility of postponing school attendance.
