| Description | The vague language of physics in textbooks and teaching is one of the main sources of student misconceptions. Statements such as “energy is used up” or “heat flows” may “sound right” but they provide students with misleading models of reality and prevent real conceptual change. Research in cognitive psychology shows that learning occurs primarily when the meaning relationships between concepts are rearranged – and language plays a key role in this process. This is not only the language of the teacher, but above all the language of textbooks and other educational materials, which must be semantically correct and logically consistent. In this paper, we will present a project to revise the language of physics based on logical analysis of statements using Transparent Intensional Logic (TIL) and the use of artificial intelligence to detect and correct problematic formulations. Our goal is to develop a system of language rules that is at the same time physically accurate, didactically appropriate and psychologically supportive – and which will help improve both the language of teaching and the language of textbooks. In our post, we will summarize the main problems, the project approach, and examples of specific proofreading. |
