Description The use of plant biomass in biogas plants represents an efficient method of producing bioenergy. One option is the use of beet plant residues from sugar production – sugar beet tops. In our research, fermentation tests of four substrate variants were performed: leaves, top without leaves, top with leaves and top with leaves + straw. Statistical processing of results showed that the substrate variant best suitable for the production of biomethane is top without leaves, as it exhibits high content of sugars and low content of lignin, both accelerating the process of fermentation. Other partially suitable substrates are top with leaves and leaves with straw being the least suitable substrate due to its high content of lignin and low content of sugar. The highest concentration of biomethane in biogas was achieved with the substrate top without leaves, while the lowest concentration was recorded with the combination of top with leaves + straw.
