| Description | The chapter synthesises the main findings of the book on the impact of parental imprisonment on children and families and translates them into policy and practice recommendations. It shows that parental incarceration systematically weakens emotional bonds, parental roles and authority, produces long-term insecurity in children and gradually pushes them out of key relational and social networks. The authors emphasise the importance of regular, child-appropriate contact with the incarcerated parent for children’s stability, identity and future life chances. The chapter formulates core tasks for the state, prison services and social work – from early identification of children of prisoners, through the support of relationship-oriented programmes and child-friendly visits, to improved intersectoral coordination. It concludes by arguing for a major shift in perspective that recognises these children as “forgotten victims” and calls for targeted measures to prevent the intergenerational transmission of disadvantage. |
