| Description | This chapter examines how children and the adults around them perceive the impact of parental imprisonment on a child’s life. It shows that incarceration affects not only the material and practical conditions of family life, but also disrupts relationships, emotional security, identity, and the child’s chances of social inclusion. Based on testimonies from children, caregivers, and incarcerated parents, the chapter highlights differences in their perspectives, the role of stigma and silence, and the importance of communication support, stable caregiving, and adequate information for children. It offers deeper insight into the experience of children living “in the shadows of the bars” and points to opportunities for targeted support within social work, schools, and families. |
