| Description | Coaching, a key feature of organised sports, denotes a specific identity, role, or profession of a sport coach and, simultaneously, an intervention process formed by particular individuals and institutions together with coaches. Sports coaching research has been developing dynamically since the 1970s. The review study aimed to identify the scope of coaching research and its current thematic focus over the past 15 years. Masaryk University’s information resources provided access to global paid information resources (https://ezdroje.muni.cz) and provided data for content analysis. We used combinations of keywords: sports, coach, coaching, and research. To determine the frequency of individual research topics, additional terms were coach education, gender and coaching, coach development, and coach behaviour. Identifying current research topics was based on a qualitative content analysis of monothematic issues of the International Sport Coaching Journal and Sports Coaching Review journals. In both cases, we limited the analyses to the last 15 years, in which the basic research topics of sports coaching crystallised. At the same time, the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic were empirically reflected. Coaching research has shown a significant increase of 164% over the last 15 years. They often focused on gender issues in coaching, coach education, coach development and behaviour. In terms of the number of published research reports, gender analyses of coaching prevailed, which, however, very often included, similarly to research on the coach development and gradation or coach behaviour, also the issue of coach education, which thus continues to represent the leading research topic of sports coaching. |
