| Description | After resolving technical issues of an instrumental nature, the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of art has reached a stage where we must ask ourselves far more fundamental questions of an ontological nature. Today's use of software neural networks in music creation no longer raises questions such as "how?", but rather "why?", "should we even do it?" or "under what conditions?". The advent of AI is reminiscent in many ways of the advent of revolutionary technologies such as nuclear energy or genetic engineering, where once technical issues had been resolved, ethical aspects had to be addressed. Pre-trained neural networks (GPT; Generative Pre-trained Transformers) are now a freely available online software tool that builds on a long tradition of generative, electroacoustic, and computer-assisted music. Despite often utopian, skeptical, or pessimistic ideas about the near future of music, we will attempt to explain the current situation in the context of the historical development of technology-driven music. We already have experience with the advent of new technology in music: in the 1950s, it was the shocking invasion of electroacoustic music into the world of art. Today, this situation leaves us completely cold, which can also be expected in the case of AI over time. However, the most important issue at present is probably the question of the extent to which the creative performance of neural networks will limit or expand the scope of human creativity. This chapter is devoted to finding answers to the above mentioned questions. |
