Description This paper examines the development of the network of minor schools (the so-called Trivialschulen in German) in Moravia following the issuance of the General School Ordinance (Allgemeine Schulordnung in German) of 1774, within the context of Theresian and Josephinian educational and school reforms. Based on archival sources held in the Moravian Provincial Archives in Brno and the Austrian State Archives in Vienna, it tracks not only the quantitative increase in the number of schools from 1774 until the end of the 18th century but also the practical implementation of school regulations and reforms, and regional differences in development across six districts of Moravia. The study further focuses on key figures in the organization of lower education, institutional mechanisms, and the status of non-Catholic minor schools. Analysis of official correspondence, formal reports, and school reports (Schulfassionen in Latin) from regional school commissioners (Kreisschulkommissäre in German) enables a more detailed understanding of the expansion of minor schools and their regional specificities. The study also places the development of Moravian schooling within the broader context of the Habsburg monarchy and emphasizes the need for deeper research into its distinctive developmental tendencies.
