| Description | Our paper focuses on symbolist elements in the plays of Fráňa Šrámek. We draw on the principles formulated by the authors of symbolist drama in France, as well as on both contemporary and later theoretical reflections on symbolism. We examine which elements connect Šrámek’s dramatic work with that of Maurice Maeterlinck and other francophone writers. The symbolist poetics of Maeterlinck’s oeuvre has been thoroughly analysed by the contemporary literary theorist Mireille Losco-Lena. We therefore ask whether the features identified by this scholar can be applied not only to the works of French-language authors, but also to the plays of Fráňa Šrámek. |
