| Description | Today, ‘foreignness’ and ‘strangeness’ are considered polarised, combative terms that are often misused to gain interpretive authority in political discourses on affiliation and identity. This work, which is devoted to the perspective of imperial cities, not only points to a significantly more pragmatic approach to foreigners, but also to the positive influence they could have on the genesis of a city government. The often more extensive sources in these cities provide an in-depth insight into the treatment of minorities, which also reveals internal differences within individual groups. Some contributions also emphasise the dynamics of the perception of foreigners, which was influenced by questions of religion, economic and legal changes, but also by the threat of war. |
