| Description | Lyme disease, caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, is an infectious disease affecting the skin, peripheral and central nervous system, musculoskeletal system, cardiovascular system, and, in rare cases, the visual organs. In the early stages of the disease, symptoms are linked to the presence of viable bacteria at the site of inflammation. The interaction between the pathogen and the host is complex and not yet fully understood. Although B. burgdorferi is relatively sensitive to antibiotic treatment and most patients respond positively to treatment , 6-20% of patients continue to experience various symptoms even after completing therapy. However, current recommended treatment guidelines do not offer an effective solution for these persistent conditions. It is therefore crucial to optimize treatment at the first detection of the disease. This lecture provides an overview of the available studies on which the current recommended procedures for the treatment of early Lyme disease are based. At the same time, it considers possibilities for improving the treatment of the initial stages of the disease and presents initial experiences with combined antibiotic therapy. |
