| Description | The château in Brtnice, originally a castle, has traditionally been linked in the existing literature to the year 1436. However, the latest research shows that its origins can be dated at least to the second half of the 14th century, while also opening up the possibility of tracing the site’s development as early as the 13th century. Written sources from this period provide no further new insights, and the reconstruction therefore relies primarily on archaeological data, supplemented by building-historical and geophysical surveys and dendrochronological results. These analyses make it possible to establish a relative chronology of the construction phases and to define time horizons that form the basis for reconstructing the castle’s appearance in the 14th and 15th centuries. The new findings thus not only fundamentally change previous ideas about the castle’s origins, but also emphasize Brtnice’s role as a central place in the region. They also open up a broader discussion on the form of administrative centres and their transformation during the 13th century, a period of intensive colonization in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. |
